A unique collaboration with the Michigan Eye-Bank demonstrates Durable Mecco’s made-to-order stamp capabilities, where a precisely engraved mark helps surgeons quickly verify corneal orientation during transplant procedures. Custom steel stamps are usually thought of as straightforward shop tools. A logo. A part number. A date code. Something permanent, repeatable, and durable enough to survive real-world handling. That’s exactly what Durable Mecco has been building for decades. But every now and then, a project comes along that shows just how much impact a small, precisely made tool can have. One of those projects started with a phone call from the Michigan Eye-Bank. The Eye-Bank’s clinical team was looking for a better way to help surgeons confirm that donated corneas were placed correctly during transplant procedures. Orientation matters. A cornea placed upside down can compromise the success of the surgery, and surgeons needed a fast, reliable visual confirmation in the operating room. At the time, the only available solution came from medical supply companies selling tiny steel stamping rods at prices approaching $1,000 per stamp. The concept worked, but the cost didn’t. That’s when Kyle Mavin, Director of Clinical Services at the Michigan Eye-Bank, started looking outside the traditional medical supply channel. He reached out to Stamprite Supersine, a Lansing, Michigan millwright operation that would later become part of Durable Mecco’s custom stamp division. It wasn’t a typical request. “When I first called Stamprite, I wasn’t even sure if it was something they could do,” Mavin said at the time. “It seemed like such a strange request, but they were excited to make it.” That response is telling. Custom stamp work often lives in the margins of manufacturing. It requires patience, precision, and a willingness to solve problems that don’t come with a standard print or catalog part number. Within a week, the stamps were complete. The tools themselves were slender stainless-steel pencil rods with a microscopic “S” engraved at the tip. When laboratory technicians prepare corneal tissue, they use ink to place a tiny “S” on the side of the cornea that should face upward. Under magnification, the mark is clear. In surgery, it provides immediate confirmation. No guessing. No delay. Laurie Barcaskey, from Leading Marks, has long said that projects like this stand out. “It is gratifying to work with organizations like the Michigan Eye-Bank that place emphasis on making vision possible so that others can see the world with greater clarity,” she said. That perspective reflects how Durable Mecco approaches custom stamping work in general. Whether the application is medical, industrial, aerospace, or infrastructure-related, the goal is the same—produce a stamp that does exactly what it needs to do, every time, without drama or compromise. Lisa Langley, Executive Director of the Michigan Eye-Bank, later summed it up best. “To think that we were able to pick up the phone, describe a unique need to someone not in the field of sight restoration, and then receive exactly what we asked for—something that has made a real difference in patient outcomes—stops me in my tracks every time,” she said. “People giving their time, their talent, their gift of sight—it all creates micro and macro ripples that change lives.” That story may be unusual, but the underlying capability is not. Durable Mecco’s custom steel stamps are built for applications where clarity, permanence, and consistency matter. Sometimes that means marking steel castings or structural components. Other times, it means engraving a symbol so small it only makes sense under 10x magnification. Either way, the value of a custom stamp isn’t measured by its size. It’s measured by how well it solves the problem it was made for. From Idea to Finished Stamp Designing a made-to-order custom metal stamp from Durable Mecco doesn't require perfect drawings or deep technical knowledge. The process starts with an idea and a conversation. Some customers come in with detailed CAD files and exact specifications. Others have a rough sketch or a clear description of what the stamp needs to do. Both approaches work.
The machining equipment at Durable Mecco allows single stamps or small batches to be produced with consistent detail and durability, without unnecessary lead times. The result is a custom tool that performs exactly as intended, whether it’s marking industrial components or serving a highly specialized application.
If you have a custom stamp in mind—fully defined or still taking shape--Leading Marks can help to move it forward. Share your idea, explain the application, and start the conversation. A well-designed stamp solves problems quietly, consistently, and for a long time.
